DeLand, FL - The Volusia County Council approved a rezoning change for the Jungle Den area of Astor today and it appears that current residents, the developer, and Council members all agree that this is a good change.
Georgia Turner, Executive Director of the West Volusia Tourism Advertising Authority (WVTAA), said the agency supports the project. "We believe that it's going to be a welcome addition to West Volusia, sure to attract both people in the county and people from all over the country. The project's also going to contribute to the economic development of that area. I'd just like to thank you for your time and consideration and we're real excited about this project.
Ben Johnson, Council Member at Large, said that he's watched that part of the county go downhill and this is a chance to do something for the area. "I'm fully in support of this because I can't actually wait for us to see this kind of a resort come here. It's something that will put Astor back on the map for the good. Also, the idea of a Sheriff's substation up there and that's something that will be a great help."
Clay Ervin, Director of Growth and Resouce Management, said that the almost 90 acres of property currently has three separate zonings. The zoning change will allow for redevelopment of the original hotel and marina. Ervin says the development will move permanent residents out of a flood-prone area.
A plus of the area is that there are existing boat slips and boat docks on the property. The plan is to have a Volusia Sheriff's Office substation there that could accommodate the Sheriff's Marine Patrol. It also plays into the county's manatee protection plan.
The resolution to approve the zoning change was unanimously approved.
