VCSB Expected To Move Forward With Making Face Masks Optional

Posted

DeLand, FL - During a workshop tomorrow, (May 11) Volusia County School Board (VCSB) members will talk about Employment Benefit Contract for the coming school year. Also on the agenda are proposed changes to Policy 503, which required mandatory face coverings, put in place in July 2020.

VCSB District 4 member Carl Persis said that School Superintendent Dr. Scott Fritz was directed to modify the current policy. "One of the things that we learned was that because of the advertising requirements we need to advertise this for 28 days."

At this time, the draft policy states that the provision to make face coverings optional for students and employees would become effective July 1. Persis said he'd like for the effective date to be the beginning of summer school in June. "We will be asking the Superintendent what can we do so that facial coverings  would become optional for those students and employees, rather than them have to wait until July."

The workshop is scheduled from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. The regular meeting gets underway at 3:30 p.m.
