VCSB Member Looks Forward To Face Covering Policy Change

DeLand, FL - Florida Department of Education (FDE) Commissioner Richard Corcoran issued a memorandum yesterday (April 14) asking that districts who are currently mandating face-covering policies, revise that policy to be voluntary in time for the 2021-2022 school year.

A member of the Volusia County School Board (VCSB), District 4 representative Carl Persis, has already broached the subject of face coverings during a previous school board meeting. He said that he's happy that the Commissioner issued the memorandum asking districts to do so. "In Volusia County, we have already started that conversation  so, I am hoping that no later than the last school board meeting in June, that the board will adopt a new face-covering policy."

Persis says that an effective date for the change in policy is up to the school board but he'd like it to happen in time for summer school. "My preference would be so that the summer school sessions beginning in July would be under the voluntary mask-wearing policy. If we cannot get it by that time, then certainly beginning with the start of the next school year."

The next VCSB meeting is scheduled for April 27, 2021.
