Daytona Beach, FL - An investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement into a June 1, 2021, officer-involved shooting, has cleared the Volusia Sheriff's Office deputies involved. State Attorney, Seventh Judicial District R.J. Larizza issued a letter yesterday (September 15) advising "that this office has reviewed all of the investigative reports, officer statements, and witness statements provided by your office regarding the “police use of force” involving Deputy Nicole Richardson, Deputy Michael Sawicki, Deputy Donald Gray, Deputy Anthony Zimmerer, Deputy Anthony Ray, Sgt. William Maxwell, Sgt. Omar Bello and Det. David Winhoven during the incident that occurred on June 1. Based on a review of the investigation and the information provided, no further action is warranted by this office.
The shoot-out happened at an Enterprise home that a 14-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy had broken into after they ran away from the Florida United Methodist Children’s Home.

On June 17, 2021, Larizza announced that the 14-year-old will be tried as an adult on charges of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, armed burglary of a dwelling, and criminal mischief of $1,000 or more.
