DeLand, FL - A Lake County father, 50-year-old George Shiver and his 16-year-old son are charged with grand theft auto after Volusia Sheriff’s deputies say they found the teen driving the stolen vehicle.

VSO deputies were conducting proactive patrol in the area of U.S. 17 and S.R. 11 around 2:30 a.m. today (April 15), when they located a vehicle stolen in Leesburg on April 13. They attempted a traffic stop and the vehicle fled. When deputies found the vehicle again on Marsh Road just off S.R. 11, the driver abandoned the vehicle. Deputies set up a perimeter and K-9 and Air-1 responded. A K-9 officer tracked the suspect who surrendered without incident. The investigation showed that the teen had hit a fence panel at one home and a  stop sign at King Charles and U.S.11. He's charged with fleeing and eluding, leaving the scene of crash twice, and grand theft of a motor vehicle.

Further investigation led deputies to the DeLand Walmart on North Woodland Boulevard where they found Shiver, who was found to have an open warrant for Failure to Appear on a heroin trafficking  charge.

Deputies say during the interview, Shiver admitted knowing the car was stolen and that he and his sixteen-year-old son took a joy ride around Lake and Volusia counties, before he was dropped off at the Walmart.

In addition to the warrant, Shiver is charged as principal to grand theft (motor vehicle), contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and trespass in a conveyance. The Department of Children and Families were notified about the teen
