New Smyrna Beach, FL - A 14-year-old New Smyrna Beach Middle School student is charged with making threats to discharge a destructive device after several witnesses say they heard the teen making the threats.

The first witness overheard two students on the school bus on Monday (December 16) talking about another student who was going to shoot up the school because of a certain video. This witness said he did not know and of the names involved.

Another witness said she overheard other students talking about the same type of threat in the cafeteria, also on Monday. A third witness said the suspect had said in the past that he would bring his father's gun to school and shoot people and then himself.

The Volusia Sheriff's Office spoke with the suspect Monday evening and based on the information gathered in the investigation, determined there was probable cause to arrest the suspect. The teen's father said he does have firearms in the home but they are in a locked safe with the firing pins removed. He stated that his son does not have access to any of the firearms.
