DeLand, FL - With all schools in Florida being shut down through at least April 15, school districts are preparing digital learning programs. Volusia County Schools is trying to be ready for this coming Monday.
Volusia United Educators President Elizabeth Albert says every student in the world is going to have a gap in their learning this year. She says that everyone should have more time to learn the program and fears that parents and children will disengage if they can’t figure it out. "What I'd like to see is a slower roll, a gradual release so that people can become comfortable, they can become familiar and fluent. Then they will say, 'Oh yeah, I can do this.' Then they'll be more apt to engage for the long haul."
Albert says a big concern is with multiple children and how everyone will have time to complete their work. She fears that some families may only have one device and multiple children. "Let's say you have an elementary school student who's supposed to be working three hours per day and you have a secondary student who's supposed to work four hours per day. How is that all going to work?"
This is a worldwide epidemic and Albert says all children will have a learning gap this year, no matter where they live in the world. She feels that more thought should be put into the rollout of digital learning.
