Daytona Beach, FL - A 23-year-old male who was attempting to cross Mason Avenue was struck and killed near the Seabreeze Bridge early Saturday morning (June 20th).

The Daytona Beach Police Department says the unidentified male was found lying in the grass near Mason Avenue's intersection with North Beach Street by first responders. According to their report, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

Investigators say the man was crossing Mason Avenue northbound on foot near the bridge when he was struck by the passenger side of a 2009 Acura, driven by an unidentified 21-year-old male, that was headed westbound on Mason.

The driver did not have any injuries. Police also say that he stayed on the scene, called 911 for assistance and cooperated with investigators. Per the driver's report, he attempted to move from the left lane to the right lane in order to avoid a collision, but the victim was running back and forth between lanes.

Both the driver and a witness at the scene also said the pedestrian was wearing dark clothes at the time.

The driver was allowed to leave the scene with his vehicle after working with investigators. The intersection was also closed for several hours as the investigation continued.

Messod Bendayan, public information officer for the DBPD, said in a release that it is not clear if the victim used the crosswalk at the time of the accident. However, detectives have determined that he did not have the signal to cross while the Acura had the green light.

Investigators are now attempting to notify the victim’s next of kin and confirm where the victim lived.

Additionally, there are no charges pending in this case.
