DAYTONA BEACH SHORES, Fla. - A man was pronounced dead in Daytona Beach Shores Thursday after being pulled unresponsive from the ocean, the Volusia County Beach Safety Ocean Rescue announced yesterday. The man's name is not currently known and it's not yet clear what his precise cause of death was.

According to Deputy Chief Tamara Malphurs of Volusia County Beach Safety, the 76-year-old man was a resident of Tennessee at the beach with family. He had been swimming in an area unprotected by lifeguards, Malphurs says, near the 3100 block of Daytona Beach Shores. Something happened to the man while he was swimming, and he was suddenly seen floating unresponsive.

The man's daughter found him and pulled him to shore, where Volusia County Beach Safety responded and began to perform CPR. He was transported to a nearby hospital, where medical staff pronounced him dead. Likely causes of death include drowning after being caught in a rip current or having some sort of medical incident while swimming, but we won't know for sure until the Volusia Sheriff's Office announces the results of its ongoing investigation.

Little else is known for the time being. More will be added to this story if and when it becomes available.
