DeLand, FL - An 85-year-old man who was pinned under a tractor on Thursday has succumbed to his injuries.
VCSO deputies were called to 1624 Hazen Rd. in DeLand around noon on July 27 after James H. Gordon Jr. called his wife for help after he became pinned under the tractor. A lawn service worker was able to get the tractor off of Gordon, who was then brought to Florida Hospital DeLand, but life-saving measures there were unsuccessful. Gordon was pronounced dead in the emergency room at about 1:02 PM.
Detectives interviewed Gordon's wife, who told them that he had called lawn service and the crew was on its way to their home when the 85-year-old went out to the barn to start the tractor. The tractor was already in gear so when Gordon started it, it lurched forward and ran over him, pinning him under the front right tire. The lawn crew worker told detectives that the tractor was still in gear when he moved it off of Gordon and he had to put it into neutral.
