DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Jean Macean, the man accused of brutally murdering a couple in Daytona Beach last year, appeared in court again on Friday to discuss his competency to stand trial. Macean is linked to the murders of Brenda and Terry Aultman during Bike Week 2022.
According to police, the Aultmans were riding their bicycles home from a Bike Week event when Macean stabbed both to death. He was arrested and charged with two counts of first degree murder for the killings after a days-long manhunt. As of now, the leading belief is that the killings were not premeditated in any way.
Macean has already received a medical evaluation that deemed him competent to stand trial, performed by a state hospital after his arrest. Still, Macean's defense attorneys subjected him to a competency test of their own, the nature of which they revealed to a judge Friday. The results of this evaluation are slated to be released on August 30th, Macean's next court hearing.
In the days following Macean's arrest, Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young said he confessed to police that he murdered the couple. The Aultmans' murder was among the grizzliest Young had seen in his law enforcement career, with both victims having been stabbed repeatedly and slashed to the neck.
