Almost 4-Hour Stand Off Ends With Multiple Charges For Daytona Beach Man

Daytona Beach, FL - An almost 4-hour standoff comes to a close with the arrest of a Daytona Beach man for multiple charges, including false imprisonment.

The Daytona Beach Police Department says a 911 call placed by a woman is what brought officers to the Cape Morris Cove Apartments on Big Tree Road and Clyde Morris Boulevard Wednesday night (Feb. 2). In that call, the woman said Stephen Shank was having a mental episode and accused her of controlling his television and cellphone.

While the woman spoke to dispatchers, Shank reportedly made threats against the first responders that were waiting outside of his building, saying he wanted to gun them down and set off a bomb. The woman said there was no bomb, but she did confirm there was a firearm in the house, but Shank was not armed.

Dispatchers also asked the woman to leave the apartment, but she said Shank threatened to hurt her if she did.

Negotiators arrived at the scene after the call was made. Officers talked with Shank for a number of hours, but ultimately decided around 11:30 that the DBPD’s SWAT team was going to force their way into the apartment. Shank was taken into custody after refusing to surrender peacefully. No one was injured during the incident.

As of Thursday morning (Jan. 3), Shank remains in the Volusia County Jail, charged with a felony count of false imprisonment and misdemeanor charges of assault on a person 65 years of age or older and resisting an officer. He will remain in custody with no bond until he makes his first appearance in front of a judge.

A check of the Volusia County Clerk of Courts shows Shank has been charged 26 times between 2001 and 2022.
