Amazon Alexa Catches Thief In The Act

Posted

Ormond Beach, FL - The Ormond Beach Police Department is reporting that an Amazon Alexa device caught 47-year-old Russell Bannister in the act of stealing from a resident at an assisted living facility.

Police say a family member was alerted by the device while Bannister was in the room stealing cash and credit cards. That person went to the Brookdale Assisted Living Facility and found Bannister still in the room.

OBPD's investigation found additional victims, all over the age of 90. They say that Bannister has likely committed the same crime in other parts of the county. Police ask that family members check in with relatives staying at any A-S-L.

Bannister was also arrested on November 29 for possession of methamphetamine.

This isn't the first time Bannister has preyed on the elderly. In 2016, the Volusia Sheriff's Office says he worked a handyman scam, getting paid in advance and never doing the work.
