Daytona Beach, FL - Three suspects are in custody while police investigate a supposed threat made against Mainland High School.
Yesterday (February 13th), officers responded to the school's campus after hearing that shots were reportedly fired on campus around 12:30.
Within two minutes of the call being made, an estimated 50 to 75 officers responded from multiple agencies including the Daytona Beach Police Department, Volusia Sheriff’s Office, Volusia County Beach Safety and the Ormond Beach Police Department.
When officers arrived, no shooter or weapons were found. Instead, first responders found the remains of what appeared to be firecrackers. The buildings were cleared and no injuries were reported.
During their investigation, three suspects were arrested in connection to setting off the firecrackers and causing a panic. Daytona Beach police confirm that they are juveniles and have not identified them as of yet.
Messod Bendayan, public information officer for the Daytona Beach Police Department, said that despite the arrests, the investigation continues. Bendayan said in an email that the DBPD received multiple reports from the public about a threat that was making its way around social media regarding a shooting today (February 14th) at Mainland High School.
In response, police have launched an investigation into the supposed threat. Bendayan also confirmed that extra officers will be around the campus throughout today.
