Test Driver Killed On-Track at Daytona International Speedway

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - One man was killed at Daytona International Speedway on Saturday in a vehicle accident on-track, according to officials with NASCAR. Little is publicly known about the nature of the strange incident at this time.

According to officials, Daytona International Speedway was being rented out by members of Audi Club for an International GT test session. A driver, identified as Mark Mathys, was killed after his track time went went sideways quickly.

One individual who identified themselves as a family member of Mathys' said he had a flat tire and hit the wall. Two other cars then lost control, the person said, and one of them collided with Mathys' car. It was also stated that Mathys was either killed instantly or while being transported to a local hospital.

"Today was a sad day at the race track. My friend and client, Mark Mathys passed away during an incident on track during IGT practice at Daytona," said Mike Skeen, the Facebook user who put a name to the tragis crash. "My heart goes out to his family and friends that he loved so much. He was a passionate enthusiast of the sport who will be missed in the paddock."
