Burnette To Swear In Next Week

DeLand, FL - At next week's Volusia County School Board meeting, board members are expected to swear in their newest addition.

Anita Burnette secured the District 2 representative spot—which encompasses Daytona Beach and part of Port Orange—that was once held by the incumbent Ida Wright, who lost the position on Election Day after Burnette secured 59.6% of the vote.

Ida, who has served since 2013, joined board members Tuesday night (November 10th) for what would be her last meeting as a school board representative and as the chairperson for the board.

Ruben Colón, who serves as the board's District 5 representative, spoke to News Daytona Beach to talk about Wright and said that she will be missed on the board.

"She always brought a true desire to serve children," said Colón. "Not only the children in her community, but also those across Volusia County."

At their next meeting, which is slated for next Tuesday (November 17th), Burnette will be sworn in as the new District 2 representative. In addition to Burnette's swearing-in, board members will also pick a new chairman and vice chairman.

"We are so excited to have her be a part of our board," added Colón.

Carl Persis, who will keep his spot as District 4 representative, will also be sworn in again alongside Burnette. Persis won his spot after running unopposed in the August 18th Primary Election.
