Most people wake up with a nasty headache or dehydration the day after drinking too much. If a report on Monday from the Volusia Sheriff's Office is anything to go by, Alex Kudlack woke up in a much worse situation: he was facing two felony and two misdemeanor criminal charges.
A family residing on Evergreen Terrace was at home when bullets suddenly began hitting and entering their home, according to the VSO's description of the situation. They took cover and called 911, probably worried there was an active shooter situation. There was - but likely one driven more by poor judgment than malice.
38-year-old Alex Kudlack, the family's neighbor, was determined to be the source of the gunfire. He was said to have been shooting a tree in his own backyard, evidently either missing entirely or ricocheting bullets into his neighbor's home. Either way, he has a long way to go if he ever intends to qualify for the U.S. Olympic shooting team in 2028.
There were several bullet holes in the plastic fence immediately behind the tree on Kudlack's property, as shown in deputy bodycam footage. "At least he was fairly accurate...sorta," one deputy said while inspecting the tree.
The stupidity of the alleged crimes was not lost on Kudlack, who told deputies "yeah, I'm a dumb***" as he was being arrested. He was charged with one count of felony shooting into a dwelling, two counts of felony child endangerment, one count of misdemeanor criminal mischief, and one count of misdemeanor usage of a firearm while intoxicated.
