Earlier Reporting:

A domestic violence incident involving an attempted drowning in Deltona early Monday morning ended with gunfire when the suspect refused to drop his gun and fired, prompting a Volusia County Sheriff's deputy to return fire.

A 911 call came in at 1:35 AM on April 10 about a domestic fight between a married couple in the 300-block of Champlain Dr. The victim told dispatchers that her husband, 48, had tried to drown her in the swimming pool. About 3 minutes later another 911 call came in - this time from a neighbor. He said the woman, who was soaking wet, had come to his house, banging on the door and looking for help.

Deputies got to the scene at around 1:37 AM, and about 5 minutes later the husband came out of the front door with a gun. Deputies ordered him to put it down but he refused and fired the weapon. Deputies shot back, hitting him several times in the arm and leg. According to VCSO, a resident who lives on the street behind Champlain Dr said he was on his back porch at the time and heard someone say "drop the gun" several times before he heard shots go off. The suspect was conscious and alert as he was loaded onto a VCSO helicopter to be brought to the hospital.

The husband was flown to Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford and his 49-year-old wife was brought to Florida Hospital Fish Memorial in Orange City. Doctors say the husband's injuries are not life threatening.

The deputy involved in the shooting has been placed on paid administrative leave. The FL Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE) is investigating.
