Deltona Middle Schooler Charged with Bringing in a Gun

DELTONA, Fla. - A student at Galaxy Middle School has been accused by the Volusia Sheriff's Office of bringing a gun to school, and has been charged with possession of a firearm on school property. He is 15 years old.

Police reportedly discovered what had happened when they were tipped off to an Instagram story posted by the student. Different from a post, a story on social media stays on the user's profile for 24 hours then vanishes forever.

The moment in the student's story in which the gun was apparently brandished on school property.

In the story, the student is said to have pointed a handgun at the camera, before discharging the magazine and showing at least one round of ammo was loaded. The video apparently was filmed in a restroom at Galaxy Middle School, something the student admitted to police when they later questioned him.

Another wrinkle is added to the story in where deputies think the gun came from: the VSO has tied it to a Deltona car burglary in which the victim reported losing his 9mm handgun. He said it was taken from his glove box.

As of now, the student is only charged with possession of a firearm on school property, but additional charges are possible pending further investigation. Sheriff Mike Chitwood is urging residents to secure their guns safely inside their homes, as leaving them in vehicles leaves them susceptible to break-in thefts.
