
DeLand, FL – Downtown DeLand is in the running for the best main street in American as one of 10 semifinalists in America’s Main Street contest.
Downtown DeLand has made it through the round of 25 quarterfinalists and has joined the following towns in the final round of the competition:
“It’s exciting that DeLand has such good support,” says Wayne Carter, Main Street DeLand Association Executive Director. “We think our story speaks for itself and anyone who comes here will find Downtown DeLand to be a really special place.”
Next week, the winner of the $25,000 competition is expected to be announced. A downtown organization will be chosen after a panel of judges evaluates the nominations from each town.
“First off, we want to thank everybody for helping us get to this point. You know, we were on Facebook and any other way of reaching out to people to let them know that they should vote for DeLand,” says Chris Graham, Community Information Specialist with the City of DeLand. “It’s our understanding that the winner will be announced next Monday at 10 AM and is going to be out of our hands now."
Stihl Inc. is presenting the contest in partnership with the group, Independent We Stand, which advocates and educates on the behalf of local and independently-owned businesses.
“I’d like to thank all of the people who voted for us. It demonstrates our community is proud of downtown DeLand,” says Bob Apgar, DeLand Mayor. “Once again, DeLand stands out as one of the best Main Streets in America.”
