Daytona Beach, FL - Another 58 cases of Hepatitis A have been reported in the state of Florida for the week ending December 14. Eight of those are right here in Volusia County.

The new cases bring the total in Volusia County to 299 reported since January 1. The number of cases in Florida is approaching 3,300.

Hepatitis A is contagious. It can be spread through human feces by people who do not wash their hands thoroughly after using the bathroom. It can also be spread through sex and IV use.

Department of Health Secretary Scott Rivkees says he believes that education and vaccination efforts have slowed the spread of the disease.

The easiest and most effective way to prevent Hepatitis A is to get vaccinated. If you can't get vaccinated for some reason, the next best preventative is washing your hands thoroughly with soap and warm water.
