Elderly Man Found In Retention Pond, Police Seeking Information

Daytona Beach, FL - Daytona Beach police say an elderly resident passed away after his vehicle was found in a retention pond inside the LPGA International subdivision.

And investigators are seeking more information about what happened.

The Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD) says first responders were called to the intersection of Tournament Drive and Champions Drive Sunday afternoon (August 29) around 3:40. As crews arrived they discovered a blue 2021 Ford Explorer completely submerged in water. Inside the vehicle was 75-year-old Wayne A. Martin, who was a resident of LPGA International, according to police.

Investigators say first responders pulled Martin out of the vehicle and attempted to revive him. Martin was then transported to Halifax Health Medical Center where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

Investigators believe Martin was driving east on Tournament when the vehicle ran the stop sign at Champions without any apparent attempt to slow down. The car then drove over the curb and off the road before traveling into the retention pond located east of the intersection.

The preliminary investigation so far shows that Martin may have had a medical episode while driving, as investigators say it appears he was alone in the car at the time of the incident.

Police believe that no other vehicles or subjects were involved. According to a release from the department, no charges are pending in this incident.
