Owen Not Seeking Reelection, Hathaway Runs For Mayor

New Smyrna Beach, FL - We’re a month away from the deadline to register as a candidate and there’s a new competitor in the running for New Smyrna Beach mayor. He’s also the only candidate running.

Spencer Hathaway is a managing assistant state attorney with the 7th Judicial Circuit and he is now the only competitor filed to run for New Smyrna Beach mayor. Incumbent Russ Owen originally filed to run for the seat but announced on the Friday edition (May 6) of Good Day Daytona that he decided not to seek reelection.

Hathaway was born in Daytona Beach and raised in New Smyrna Beach. After graduating from New Smyrna Beach High School, Hathaway attended Flagler College and graduated with an Honors degree in political science. He currently works with the State Attorney’s Office and oversees the misdemeanor division, specialty courts. Hathaway has also been a prosecutor for a decade.

In an email release regarding his campaign, Hathaway said he wants to focus on “fiscal responsibility, and keeping the charm.”

“New Smyrna has a rich history, vibrant artistic community, an unparalleled entertainment district, and natural resources that are the envy of the state—and all of that is worth fighting for,” said Hathaway.

Hathaway also has a bit of mayoral blood in his family. He’s the son of former NSB Mayor James Hathaway—who served until deciding not to seek reelection in 2018—and the grandson of former Mayor William S. Hathaway. He’s married to Kayla Hathaway, a New Smyrna Beach attorney, and has two young daughters, Stratton and Carolina.
