FCSO Announces 31 Arrests, 14 More Warrants, in ‘Operation Heartbreaker’

BUNNELL, Fla. – Flagler Sheriff Rick Staly on Wednesday announced that over two dozen suspects had been charged in relation to ‘Operation Heartbreaker’, an undercover mission aimed at catching drug dealers in Flagler County. 31 arrests have been made as of Wednesday afternoon, with 14 more suspects currently considered fugitives, and five unnamed individuals still awaiting charges.

Staly said the majority of the arrests took place in south Bunnell, but that a handful of others were in west Flagler County and in Palm Coast. None were in Flagler Beach in this instance, he said. All but one of the group of 43 had been arrested before. Over a kilogram of various drugs were seized, as well at over $6,400 in cash and four guns.

The breakdown of drugs seized in the arrests is as follows:

  • Cocaine – 541 grams
  • Cannabis – 364 grams
  • Methamphetamine – 226 grams
  • Fentanyl – 142 grams
  • Synthetic cathinones – 55 grams
  • MDMA – 27 grams
  • Others – 20 grams

The quantity of fentanyl seizes, while less than that of three other drugs, is enough to kill 89,720 people according to the FCSO’s release. Both Staly and Assistant State Attorney, 7th Judicial Circuit John Reid credited the operation with potentially saving countless lives. Still, Staly conceded that these suspected drug dealers would likely be replaced and his agency would pursue them as well.

Staly said the arrests were mostly of unconnected dealers, though he drew a common thread in the supply chain they would’ve allegedly used to access deadly narcotics. He blamed the crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border, currently the subject of intense debate in Washington, as exacerbating the problem in Flagler County across the country.

In line with the choosing of Valentine’s Day as the occasion of Staly’s press conference, the Flagler County Sheriff’s Office blasted the songs “Heartbreaker”, both by Led Zeppelin and Pat Benatar. He also joked that his deputies were not the Valentine’s Day gift the suspects were likely hoping for, and that they’d be spending their holiday in the county jail.
