First-Degree Murder Charge For Suspect In Overdose Death

Daytona Beach, FL - A man who is no stranger to the Volusia Sheriff's Office is now indicted on a first-degree murder charge in the overdose death of 35-year-old Mark Guerin Jr. A grand jury indicted 37-year-old Milton Marrero on Monday (October 27).

Guerin's body was found on the side of the road, near the intersection of Elkcam Boulevard and Lake Helen Osteen Road in Deltona on April 5, 2019. A toxicology report showed that he died as the result of a fentanyl overdose.

Marrero, who has been in the Volusia County Jail 19 times since 2003, was already in custody when he was arrested on the murder charge. Records show he was the subject of a traffic stop on April 23, just 18 days after Guerin's death. He was charged with multiple drug offenses. He was arrested again on May 29, at which time his bond was revoked.

This is the fifth murder indictment obtained by VCSO in an overdose investigation since 2017. Below is a list of the other four:

·         Sergio Perez, 43 (DOB 4/24/1975), Deltona, indicted April 22 on one count of first-degree murder in the death of Joshua Lacy.

·         Melanie Cunningham, 27 (DOB 5/23/1991), Deltona, indicted April 22 on two counts of 1st-degree murder in the deaths of Joshua Lacy and Heather McCurdy.

·         Hunter Romaine, 25 (DOB 9/19/1994), DeBary, indicted Sept. 5, 2018, on one count of first-degree murder in the death of Ashley Barrett. Romaine later pleaded no contest to manslaughter and was sentenced to 5 years in prison.

·         Steve Montilla, 33 (DOB 5/15/1986), Sanford, indicted June 25, 2018, on one count of first-degree murder in the death of Jacqueline Griggs. Montilla later pleaded no contest to manslaughter and was sentenced to 15 years in prison.
