Flagler Chooses New School Superintendent

Palm Coast, FL - The decision has been made and Flagler County now has a new superintendent.

Earlier today (March 10th), members of the Flagler County School Board made a unanimous vote to make Cathy Mittelstadt the replacement of current Flagler Schools Superintendent James Trager, who is set to retire on June 30th.

According to Jason Wheeler, Community Information Specialist for Flagler County Schools, Mittelstadt will begin contract talks with the school board beginning tomorrow (March 11th). From there, the school board hopes to have her in her position by June 1st, so Trager can help her transition into the job before he retires.

School Board Chair Janet McDonald spoke on making the choice to bring Mittlestadt on board: "All four of our finalists would make a wonderful Superintendent of Schools," said McDonald. "Ms. Mittelstadt is ready to start her own chapter for Flagler Schools and I am confident she will lead our District through the challenges ahead and grow our successes.”

The vote for Mittlestadt was 4-0, which, while unanimous, was missing board member Colleen Conklin, who applied for the position.

Mittlestadt is currently the Deputy Superintendent of Operations with St. Johns County Schools, where she has served as an assistant principal, principal, and Associate Superintendent of Student Support Services.

She graduated from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill and holds a master’s degree in Adaptive Physical Education from the University of Central Florida.
