DeLand, FL - The county's school board will soon begin the search for an interim superintendent after the current superintendent announces that he will be taking leave.

The School Board will meet next Tuesday (July 7th) in a special session to begin the search.

According to the agenda for that special session, Dr. Ronald "Scott" Fritz, who was hired to be the district's superintendent last November, is asking for emergency leave.

The interim superintendent will only serve for a month, as Volusia County prepares to return to school in August.

The agenda doesn't state as to why Dr. Fritz is taking the leave. However, reports say Dr. Fritz will be taking time off so he may undergo treatment and recovery for stage three rectal cancer, which he was diagnosed with over a month ago.

The meeting starts at 10 a.m.
