Getting Young People Registered to Vote

Posted

DeLand, FL - The effort to get young people registered to vote in next year's primary election is underway in Volusia County. During an interview on the Marc Bernier Show, Supervisor of Elections Lisa Lewis is going to all ten Volusia County high schools to talk about the importance of voting in every election. In the state of Florida, 16 and 17-year-olds can pre-register if they will turn 18 by election day.

Lewis said something that's important to remember is that local elections affect you the most. She makes sure to emphasize that point when she goes to high schools. Lewis said a question she is often asked about registering to vote is whether it makes it more likely that you'll get called for jury duty. Her answer is an emphatic "No." She explained that jury pools are chosen from your I.D. on your driver's license or Identification Card.

On the Marc Bernier Show, Lewis also talked about how the upcoming U.S. Census affects voting. She said it affects the Elections Office after the Census is complete. The year following the Census, there is redistricting according to the population for each municipality, the county, the school board and all the way up to the state level.

Lewis said that there are so many ways to register to vote that there is no excuse not to. You can do so in person, go to any public library and pick up an application or register online. The only requirement is a Florida driver's license or identification card.
