Gradual Phased-in Reopening Begins Saturday In Volusia County

DeLand, FL - The Volusia County Council, as expected, is following Governor Ron DeSantis' initiative, “Safe. Smart. Step-by-Step,”  in the plans for Relaunch Volusia. County Chair Ed Kelley made the announcement earlier today (April 30) that changes begin on Saturday at the beaches and on Monday at the libraries.

Kelley said that the first phase for the beaches began last week. He said he's happy to  announce that more changes are happening on Saturday. "Something that I've been waiting to say, for at least three or four weeks. I'm happy to announce that Saturday, May 2nd, we'll be lifting the physical activity requirement on the beach and allowing full activities. But don't everybody go this weekend, you know, space it out a little bit."

Social distancing is still very much a part of everyday life and it's still in effect at the beach.

Parking will remain limited at the beaches. Kelley said they are doing that to make sure social distancing requirements are maintained. "For the county's purposes the largest measure of control we have is parking. So in an effort to broaden ADA access  and provide an outlet for beach activity, we will take measures to open up a marginal amount of spots in certain areas." Restrooms, splash pads and showers remains closed at these facilities.

Kelley said that opening county facilities is in the plans but nine of the counties libraries will open on Monday, May 4th. They will offer limited computer access. You will have to make an appointment for their use and your time will be limited to one hour. Kelley listed the libraries, "Daytona Beach Regional, DeBary Public Library, DeLand Regional Library, Deltona Regional Library, Jefferson Heritage Library, Edgewater Public Library, New Smyrna Beach Regional Library, Ormond Beach Regional Library, and Port Orange Regional."
