Halifax Oncology Pharmacist Arrested For Stealing $6K Worth Of Painkillers

Posted
Daytona Beach, FL - A Halifax Health Hospital pharmacist stole over $6,000 worth of painkillers from the Radiology Oncology Center where he worked. On June 28, a charge nurse for the Radiology Oncology Center, located at 303 N. Clyde Morris Blvd., went into a locked employee restroom and found a vial of hydromorphone floating in the toilet. The nurse notified the pharmacy director who found that the vial must have come from their current supply where at least 750 doses of hydromorphone were missing. The pharmacy director then contacted the pharmacist, Mathhew Kaye, 45, about the missing painkillers. Kaye admitted to stealing the drugs and was immeadialy placed on administrative leave. Kaye received a drug test and was fired after the results came back. On July 24, the pharmacy director gave Daytona Beach Police a list of all of the drugs that went missing between July 1, 2016, and June 30, 2017. Various doses of hydrocodone, hydromorphone, lorazepam, meperidine, morphine sulfate and oxycodone were believed to be stolen by Kaye, totaling $6,395. Police were advised that Kaye was the only person with access to the drugs besides his supervisors and the director. They were told that Kaye would have been the only person to open the cabinet unless he had the day off. Kaye was booked into the Volusia County Jail on Wednesday and charged with the theft of a controlled substance and trafficking in hydromorphone.
