New Smyrna Beach, FL - Both the New Smyrna Beach Police Department and the Volusia Sheriff's Office confirm that because of a rumor/threat from yesterday (February 20), there is an increased law enforcement presence at New Smyrna Beach High School today.

The mother of one of the students, Libby Lavette, said she got the call from the school this morning saying that "they had received notice of a rumor that there was going to be a shooting today at the school. They are investigating and there will be a heavy police presence at the school and that you could come and pick up your kid. I hung up the phone and went and got my son."

Lavette says her son told her that classes were still in session and there was no lockdown. She said that there are officers from NSBPD and VSO at the corners of all corridors. She said, "When you get that call that they haven't debunked the rumor, I mean, you have to make the decision and err on the side of caution when it comes to a risk of human life.  For me, that's the reason I went to get my son."
