Daytona Beach, FL - The "Jantzen Girl" was a Daytona Beach Boardwalk icon for over 50 years before she was removed earlier this year from her spot along Ocean Avenue.
Now she's back at the World's Most Famous Beach, but she's actually much closer now to the World Center of Racing.
Workers are setting up a home at One Daytona's Victory Circle today (December 28th) for the 16-foot-long fiberglass statue, fresh off a renovation.
One Daytona General Manager Roxanne Ribakoff says the Jantzen Girl's formal unveiling will come on New Year's Eve, with those in attendance getting complimentary red bathing caps as part of the celebration.
"What we plan to do is light her up for the first time so that everybody can come out and enjoy the Jantzen Girl in her display," Ribakoff added. "That's part of our bigger New Year's Eve celebration that we're doing."
She'll be located close to the public fountain outside of Oklahoma Joe’s Barbecue.
Only four known original versions of that statue remain. It was initially created by Los Angeles-based Wolf and Vine in 1959 and made its way to Daytona Beach soon afterward, finding a resting spot atop Stamie's Smart Beachware until last April.
One Daytona worked out a loan deal with Perry Ellis International - the current owners of the Jantzen brand - for the statue, which was renovated in Washington state and then shipped cross-country back to Daytona.
The statue now becomes part of One Daytona's public art program, joining other pieces created by local artists.
