Volusia and Flagler Counties, FL - The Jewish Federation of Volusia & Flagler Counties is collecting funds to be used for the purchase of backpacks filled with school supplies that will be given to disadvantaged children.
According to Gloria Max, Executive Director of the Jewish Federation of Volusia & Flagler Counties, for the last 21 years, the Jewish Federation of Volusia & Flagler Counties has given away over 95,000 backpacks filled with school supplies, designated according to the age group of the student. Last year, the Federation gave 7,000 backpacks to local students. Counselors at 81 schools determine which students receive the backpacks.
Max says that the Jewish Federation is once again collecting donations for this annual event that benefits a great number of students in our community. The devastation caused by Hurricane Matthew left many students and their families in need of assistance and homeless children in Volusia and Flagler also need assistance.
The backpacks filled with supplies normally retail for $80 each, but the Jewish Federation orders in large quantity, so the cost is $25 per backpack.
100% of funds donated are used to purchase the backpacks filled with supplies. The Jewish Federation (a 501c3 tax deductible organization) absorbs all administrative expenses.
Each backpack contains a list of businesses, corporations and individuals who contribute, if they desire to be included on the list.
"We receive so many letters of gratitude from parents, teachers, principals and students attesting to the fact of how much this backpack giveaway is appreciated," said Max. "So many students write back that they are so surprised that the community does care for them."
