Daytona Beach, FL - It appears that red tide is not spreading towards Volusia County beaches. At least, not yet.
County officials confirmed today (October 25th) that the test results of three separate water samples taken earlier this week show no sign of Karenia brevis, the microscopic algae responsible for the natural phenomenon which has seen beaches in other parts of Florida covered with dead sea life.
Volusia County Community Information spokesperson Joanne Magley tells us each sample came from different parts of the beach.
"The county will continue to collect samples weekly for testing by Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission," Magley noted.
The samples were collected at Hiles Boulevard and Crawford Road in New Smyrna Beach and Granada Boulevard in Ormond Beach.
The test result from another sample gathered last week from the waters off Bethune Beach in New Smyrna Beach came back with "extremely low" concentration of Karenia brevis.
