A Flagler Beach woman was convicted on Thursday for role in the auto accident that killed her boyfriend in February 2025. 25-year-old Leigha Mumby was found guilty of vehicular homicide and reckless driving with serious bodily injury.
According to prosecutors, Mumby was arguing with boyfriend Daniel Waterman while the two were driving on I-95 in Flagler County. Mumby’s speed reportedly exceeded 100 miles per hour. She allegedly made a hard left turn at 94 miles per hour followed by a subsequent turn to the right, causing the vehicle to dart into the trees on the side of the road.
Before the incident, Mumby and Waterman were reportedly arguing over the former's newly discovered pregnancy. Mumby was also said to have been angered that Waterman was apparently texting another woman, an element which the prosecution says contributed to her distraught frame of mind.
The crash left Waterman with a broken neck, causing paralysis from the neck down. Though the crash itself occurred on February 9, 2025, Waterman survived until he succumbed to pneumonia on October 8, 2025. He was 22 at the time of his passing. The victim's family have reportedly stated that once he woke up from his coma, Waterman accused Mumby of causing the crash intentionally.
A jury on Wednesday issued a guilty verdict on both charges for Mumby. They deliberated for one hour and 11 minutes. Each of her two charges carries a maximum of 20 years in prison. Mumby is set to be sentenced at a later date.
