Daytona Beach, FL - Confirmed case number five of COVID-19 in Volusia County is a 70-year-old man. As in the other four cases, his condition is travel-related. As of Sunday morning, Flagler County has no confirmed cases of the coronavirus.
Gov. Ron DeSantis announced on Saturday a 30-day ban on visits to nursing homes as he acknowledged that the virus is spreading through some communities.
Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood said in a Facebook post that he has an issue with the "stranglehold on information, which is a decree that comes down from Tallahassee." The post also includes a list that shows how many cases are being monitored in each city of the county.
Spring Break begins tomorrow for both Volusia and Flagler counties and will now last for at least two weeks. Florida Education Commissioner Richard Corcoran “strongly recommended” Friday that school districts extend spring break by an extra week, in a sweeping attempt to contain the spread of the novel coronavirus known as COVID-19.
The 14 branches of the Volusia County Public Library system remain open, but all library-sponsored programs and community meetings from Mar. 14-31 will be canceled with the exception of early voting and voting precincts in the facilities.
