Longtime Daytona Radio Vet Kingbird Retires

Daytona Beach, FL - After a career that spanned five decades, one of Daytona's mainstay radio personalities is headed off the air.

His real name is James King. But, if you're one of his longtime listeners and fans, you might know him better as Kingbird, one of the voices of Daytona's country station, 93.1 Coast Country.

Kingbird is also known for his time on WGNE-FM 98.1, 98 Frog FM, another Daytona Beach country station where he worked as program director in 1990.

From there, Kingbird went on to join the ranks of 93.1 WKRO Kro Country, which eventually changed to its current name, Coast Country, in 2013.

Kingbird also recounted some of the more interesting parts of his career in a letter that was posted earlier this month on Coast Country's Facebook page. Interesting tidbits included working in a studio that used a broom handle as part of a microphone arm and dangling over a used car lot for three days.

"...everything in between has made this career 50+ year career in our community an honor and a joy," wrote Kingbird.

Tomorrow (June 26th), listeners will be able to catch Kingbird live on Coast Country one last time for his last official show.

Kingbird, not only have you brightened the day of every listener you reached, but you have brightened the lives of everyone that has been lucky enough to call you a co-worker and a friend. From your family here at Southern Stone Communications, thank you so much for the laughs and great memories. Enjoy your retirement!
