DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - A Daytona Beach man has been charged with first degree murder following a double shooting on Thursday. 35-year-old Shantell Adkins is in custody on no bond for his charges.

According to a statement from the Daytona Beach Police Department, officers received a call at around 6:37 pm on Thursday that a man was laying in his Fulton Street yard with what appeared to be a gunshot. Upon arriving at the scene, they also discovered a woman lying shot near the front door.

The man was identified as Adkins, and the woman was identified as his wife, 34-year-old Shawntai Adkins. First responders pronounced Shawntai dead at the scene. According to a police account, the couple were in a verbal dispute at the residence, leading Shawntai to call her parents to come help. Police then say Shantell grabbed a rifle and shot his wife, before then turning the gun on himself and shooting himself in the chest.

Shantell was taken to the hospital for treatment. He is listed as having been booked into the Volusia County Branch Jail on Friday, but no mugshot has yet been uploaded as of Saturday morning.
