Daytona Beach, FL - A wave of complaints regarding the 2021 Daytona Truck Meet is leading the City of Daytona Beach to sit down and discuss the future of the event.

Daytona Beach Mayor Derrick Henry issued a statement about the event on Sunday (June 13) and said that while the city welcomes each visitor that comes its way, the Daytona truck meet was an "unfortunate reminder that not all of our visitors appreciate our hospitality with the reciprocity and respect we expect and deserve."

"As a recipient of numerous correspondences regarding the ill-tempered and outright disregard for traffic laws and normal social mores, I take each complaint, inconvenience, and exposure to contemptuous activities associated with the event to heart," said Mayor Henry.

According to the mayor's statement, complaints came in from all around the city, but the bulk came from the beachside.

Mayor Henry additionally praised the work done by the Daytona Beach Police Department (DBPD) throughout the event.

"With the support of law enforcement partnerships, Chief Young and his team did a phenomenal job of planning and addressing the myriad of situations that arose," said Mayor Henry.

Among other incidents police tended to during the truck meet, officers also investigated an apparent road rage shooting near Seabreeze High School. According to the DBPD, two men got out of their vehicles and fought before they were eventually separated. As the men were leaving, one turned around and shot the other in the arm. The shooter fled the area but was later arrested at Halifax Avenue and University Boulevard. It's unclear who was involved or what the charges might be at this time.

City Manager Deric Feacher reportedly met with the event's promoters on Sunday at the Daytona International Speedway, but the exact nature of their conversation is not known. What is known is that the city will discuss the future of the Daytona Truck Meet at the city commission's next meeting, which is slated for Wednesday (June 16) at 6 p.m.
