The Volusia Sheriff's Office has reported that a missing person with Alzheimer's disease was hit and killed by a vehicle in Deltona Wednesday evening. The victim was an 80-year-old woman, whose next-of-kin have been notified by law enforcement.
According to information from the VSO, the incident occurred at around 7:10 pm when the vehicle in question was traveling near the 1400 block of Deltona Boulevard. The victim was said to have been in the inside lane of the road when she was hit.
A spokesperson with the VSO further clarified that no criminal conduct is currently suspected of the driver, and that there were no signs of impairment or skid marks. Still, it's standard policy for the VSO not to rule out criminal charges entirely until the crash investigation has entirely run its course.
Deltona Fire Rescue responded to the scene of the crash, and pronounced the victim dead at 7:37 pm. Her identity was confirmed to responders when, ten minutes after the crash occurred, a call was placed to the VSO reporting that she was a missing person who suffered from Alzheimer's disease.
