Port Orange Mayor Don Burnette Running for County Chair

Posted

PORT ORANGE, Fla. - Don Burnette, the two-term Mayor of Port Orange, announced Monday that he'd be running for Volusia County Chair in 2024, challenging incumbent Jeff Brower. So far Burnette is the only candidate to officially file with the Supervisor of Elections office, but Brower's filing is expected as campaigning gets underway.

Burnette was first elected to the Port Orange City Council in 2010, and later was elected mayor in 2016. He was re-elected to that post in 2020, and in 2024 will be term-limited from the mayorship.

“I look forward to meeting as many people all over our county as I can and discussing the future of Volusia County," Burnette said in his announcement. "I had many discussions with my family, friends and other local leaders. I have prayed long-and-hard on this decision. This is a great challenge, and I appreciate their support. I look forward to sharing my vision for our Volusia County community in the coming year."

Even with the 2024 elections over a year and a half away, candidates are quickly filing for several elected offices in Volusia County. Burnette joins incumbent Matt Reinhart as the only two candidates filed for County Council seats so far. No one has yet filed for Port Orange Mayor to succeed Burnette.
