Sex Offender Who Shot Deputy Killed Breaking Into Home

UPDATE: The Gilchrist County Sheriff's Office confirms that Miedema was shot dead by a homeowner. Miedema, a sex offender, was the subject of a brief statewide manhunt after he shot a Taylor County deputy multiple times.

Reports from the GCSO say Miedema broke into a home near the Taylor-Dixie County lines and traded gunfire with the homeowner, who was shot in his shoulder. Miedema, however, was killed during the gunfight.

A blue alert—meaning someone injured or killed a law enforcement officer and is on the run—was issued after Miedema shot Taylor County Deputy Troy Anderson three times. Anderson was airlifted to the hospital for treatment of gunshot wounds to his neck, jaw, and hand.

Anderson's condition is still not known at this time. Earlier reporting below.

Perry, FL - The Florida Department of Law Enforcement cancels a Blue Alert hours after a deputy was shot by a wanted sex offender.

You might have been woken up by the alert that went out around 11:30 Tuesday night (Feb. 22). The alert was for Gregory Miedema, who reportedly shot a Taylor County deputy multiple times before fleeing. 

As of 9:30 Wednesday morning (Feb. 23), the alert was canceled, but the FDLE did not specify why. It’s not clear if Miedema has been arrested or not. The deputy was airlifted from the scene and was said to have been seriously injured. They’re status is also not known at this time.

According to FDLE, Miedema was found guilty of possession of child pornography and a sexual offense against a minor in 2011. We’ll pass along any updates as they’re made available.
