Sheriff: Suspect Who Died Wanted Suicide By Cop

Daytona Beach, FL - The 32-year-old man who died during a recent confrontation with members of the Port Orange Police Department and the Volusia County Sheriff's Office wanted to commit suicide by cop. That's the word from Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood after his law enforcement agency released body camera footage this afternoon (November 1st) of last night's fatal shooting at a gas station near The Pavilion in Port Orange.
VCSO and POPD have placed all three of the sworn law enforcement personnel involved on administrative leave while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement investigates the circumstances behind the death of John Wurms. Prior to this afternoon's press conference at VCSO's training facility on Tiger Bay Road, Chitwood told our Marc Bernier that Wurms' parents were former law enforcement and that Wurms had a history of being violent towards women he had dated.
POPD Chief Thomas Grimaldi echoed Chitwood's sentiments, saying Wurms was given every opportunity to surrender peacefully and didn't take advantage of it.
Wurms was arrested by the Holly Hill Police Department on October 28th for stalking an ex-girlfriend, with the girlfriend telling HHPD that he had been making death threats to her on social media as well as posting sexually explicit photos of her online. She also claimed that he was caught on video recently slashing the tires of her stepfather's car. Per the report, an HHPD officer caught Wurms lurking around his ex's residence on Cedar Avenue that night with an ice pick in his possession, which he claimed was a tool he used for his motorcycle. On the day of his death, HHPD says Wurms fled from them after officers received a report that he had threatened the same ex-girlfriend involved in last week's incident. It was around 10:45 that night when Wurms was found by POPD at the 7-Eleven on 1632 Taylor Road, leading to a foot chase where Wurms allegedly pointed a gun at himself before pointing it at the officers who were chasing him. That's when shots were fired, with Wurms receiving a bullet wound to the head, per VCSO. The names of the sworn personnel involved are VCSO Deputy Devin Lafoucade and POPD Officers Jonathan Nolan and Jarrad Alevisatos. It's not clear at this point which officer fired the fatal shot.
