UPDATE: The Daytona Beach Police Department has provided further details about the shooting that took place Monday afternoon on Ridgewood Ave.

The incident began at around 12:46 p.m., when the DBPD was informed of a reported robbery at the Lumina Motel. The victim told police that he was robbed of about $500 in cash by 19-year-old Ian Sylas Garner. Police believe Garner and the victim were friends.

Officers arrived and attempted to make contact with Garner. This is when they received "multiple rounds of gunfire from inside the [hotel] room", the DBPD said in a news release. Three Daytona Beach police officers returned fire, as two women who were in the room safely exited and were taken into custody.

A perimeter around the room was formed, and the DBPD SWAT team made entry. Garner was found inside the hotel room with an apparent gunshot wound to the head. He was taken into custody and then to the hospital. As of Monday, he was stated to be alive and continuing to receive medical treatment. Daytona Beach Police Chief Jakari Young has said he believed Garner's gunshot wound was self-inflicted.

An investigation into the shooting is being conducted by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement (FDLE). The apparent robbery itself is still under investigation by the DBPD. One Daytona Beach police officer sustained a cut from apparent shrapnel in the shooting, but was not seriously hurt.

Volusia County arrest records list Garner as a resident of South Daytona. He has one booking on record in Volusia; in April 2025 Garner was taken into custody on charges of drug paraphernalia possession, controlled substance possession without a prescription, and violation of probation. Chief Young says he has about 11 total arrests with other charges including armed burglary, battery, robbery, armed trespassing, and petty theft.
