Suspect Arrested in New Smyrna Beach Shooting

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. - A suspect has been arrested in connection to a shooting on the South Dixie Freeway, the New Smyrna Beach Police Department has confirmed. Stephen Hammersley was booked into the Volusia Branch Jail on aggravated assault charges.

The shooting occurred Thursday, and left one man with a gunshot wound to the abdomen. Per the Daytona Beach News-Journal, he was transported to the hospital and said to be in stable condition.

Police say a semi-automatic gun was found on-scene, and eyewitnesses have described seeing a verbal altercation that led up to the shooting.

Multiple lanes of traffic were closed in the aftermath, but were all reopened by 9:00 am Thursday morning.
