UPDATE: The Volusia Sheriff's Office (VSO) shares more details about a deputy-involved shooting that injured a DeBary man who threatened to hurt himself and deputies if they arrived at his house.

An incident report from deputies says law enforcement was called to the Tanglewood Drive home around 8:14 on Thursday (June 10) in reference to a suicidal person. Volusia County Dispatch additionally informed deputies that the suicidal subject, a 54-year-old male, had multiple weapons in his possession.

Deputies eventually learned that the man had multiple alcoholic drinks and was last seen in a shed on the property. 911 audio provided by the sheriff's office indicates that the incident stems from a conversation the man had with his wife, who is reportedly in the middle of separating from him, where the man mentioned that he wanted to kill himself. The woman then threatened to call 911 and have him "Baker Acted," which is when he said he would get into a shootout with law enforcement. The woman also said in the 911 call that he was grabbing all of his weapons out of a safe in the home and was going to bring them to the shed at the back of the property.

Deputies who arrived at the property took cover on the home's driveway as they made visual contact with the shed. After making contact with the subject, deputies told him multiple times to drop whatever weapons he had, while he said he wasn't going to drop them.

At some point, another deputy fired multiple shots in the direction of the residence. After detaining the subject, he was transported to Central Florida Regional Hospital in Sanford, where he was treated for gunshot wounds. Deputies believe his injuries are not life-threatening.

DeBary, FL - A suspect has been wounded and deputies remain uninjured following an overnight shooting.

Details about the shooting are scarce as of Friday (June 11) morning. But, according to the Volusia Sheriff's Office (VSO), the shooting took place sometime before 9:45 Thursday (June 10) night at a home on Tanglewood Drive in DeBary.

"Thankful that our deputies are going home safe and proud of the way they handled themselves out here," said Volusia Sheriff Mike Chitwood.

Chitwood continued to comment about the incident, describing it as a "perfect example of an ambush in waiting."

"Thanks to the training and experience of these deputies, they kept themselves and each other alive and rendered aid to a man who could have killed them," added Chitwood.

Sheriff Chitwood is expected to release the body camera footage during a press conference slated for 1:00 Friday afternoon. We will pass along updates as they are made available.
