UPDATE (01-09-19): I-95 southbound is now back open, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
Earlier reporting below.
Volusia County, FL - Two people have died in two separate crashes on Volusia County's main interstates this morning.
EDGEWATER
The first happened around 12:45 a.m. on Interstate 95 southbound along Mile Marker 242 in Edgewater. That's a few miles south of the State Road 442 exit, also known as Indian River and Elkcam boulevards.
Florida Highway Patrol Lieutenant Kim Montes says that stretch of I-95 will be a "long term closure" because of hot asphalt which spilled onto the road.
"The asphalt will have to be removed and the roadway repaired," Montes added. "Southbound traffic is being diverted onto exit 244 (SR 442)."
Troopers say a driver - now identified as 23-year-old Devon Standish of Daytona Beach - went the wrong way on the southbound lanes in a 2010 Honda Insight, hitting a white 2018 Cadillac sport utility vehicle head-on. The impact sparked a fire.
Standish died at the scene. An autopsy is pending to determine if drugs and alcohol were a factor.
A Volusia County Sheriff's Office deputy and an Edgewater Police Department officer who were among the first to arrive at the crash scene managed to pull the other driver - 22-year-old Logan Aschendorf of Boca Raton - out of his vehicle before the flames spread too far.
Edgewater PD & VCSO pulled a victim from a burning vehicle after a head-on crash overnight on I-95. The other driver was killed, but these officers pulled this young man to safety so he could get to a hospital. He was listed in critical condition. Warning: Intense footage pic.twitter.com/19prX8VlE3
