VCC Approves Amendment To Chosen Redistricting Map

The Change Affects Districts 3 & 5

DeLand, FL - The Volusia County Council (VCC) will likely tweak the chosen redistricting map further before final approval. An amendment to the map, making changes to a line between Districts 3 and 5, was approved at today's (Nov. 2) meeting. Assistant County Attorney Sebrina Slack said issues can be found with any of the lines on the map, with all districts, at some point, touching communities that aren't a part of the said district. The most important thing is to have the population distributed equally.

Slack said the change will relocate a sliver of Osteen from District 5 to District 3 to fit in with U.S. Census Bureau statistics.  "The changes that will be made will affect a little over 400 people. Moving them from five into three keeps us even more within range of meeting the one percent, actually."

County staff now moves on to the next step,  preparing descriptions of the boundaries of the districts for incorporation into a proposed ordinance.  Final approval is expected to take place on December 14.

The latest map is Redistricting Plan FI-5B. You can find out how the county is handling redistricting at volusia.org.
