VCS Makes Face Masks Optional For Adults

VUE President Says She's "Disappointed"

DeLand, FL - Dr. Scott Fritz, Volusia County Schools Superintendent, made the decision on Thursday to make face-coverings optional and voluntary for all adults, effective immediately.

Volusia United Educators (VUE) President Elizabeth Albert wishes he would have waited a bit longer. She says she’s concerned about negative outcomes from the mandate being lifted. "I'm very disappointed in this decision. I think that we are just now seeing some very positive effects and so I think that there would be no harm in continuing it."

Albert said everybody is valuable and that we can't risk anyone getting sick or potentially passing away.

As for students wearing masks in school, Albert said it depends on where you are. "I know that in some schools, you do have compliance with face coverings for students. In others, you don't. I think it depends on what level you're talking about - elementary, middle, or high school."

The next Volusia County School Board meeting is scheduled for this Tuesday, October 12. Face coverings are not on the agenda.
