The 2024 Statewide Junior Lifeguard Competition Championships are being held Saturday, and they won't be far from home. The event is taking place in Volusia County, assembling the best in the field from all over the state of Florida.
The competition is taking place on the beach directly behind the Hard Rock Hotel in Daytona Beach, at 918 N. Atlantic Ave. It will kick off at 8:00 am Saturday morning, and run until 5:00 pm.
"This competition isn't just about showcasing skills; it's a glimpse into the future of beach safety," said Interim Beach Safety Director Tammy Malphurs about the event. "This is the next generation of lifeguards who will guard our beaches in Volusia County and the state."
Three age divisions of junior lifeguards will make up the contest: 9-10, 11-12, and 13-15. Those groups will compete for the top prizes in events such as boarding, swimming, paddling, and rescuing. Those wishing to attend the Statewide Junior Lifeguard Competition Championships are welcome to do so free of admission, as the event is open to the public.
